International Day of Peace, 2011

UN Flute & Strings Ensemble

The UN Music Club was again invited to participate in the ceremony marking the International Day of Peace, held each year on 21 September. The Flute & Strings Ensemble, consisting of Jay Wormus (flute), Kiyoshi Adachi (violin) and Janet Weiler (double bass) opened the ceremony with the Affetuoso movement of Telemann's Trio in G major.

Presentations on the theme of "Peace and democracy: make your voice heard" were made by a distinguished panel of speakers, and their interventions were followed by the screening of a short video entitled "Peace is a Human Right".

The Flute & Strings Ensemble closed the ceremony with a performance of the Allegro moderato movement of Joseph Haydn's London Trio no. 1.

The ceremony was attended by some 500 participants, a huge increase as compared to previous years. This year invitations went out to young people who are involved with non-governmental organisations that are working for peace.

Hundreds of young people attended the ceremony.
